HERMANNSBURG HISTORIC PRECINCT
Located 125kms South-west of Alice Springs
Originally a Lutheran Mission it was the first town in Central Australia. It is also the birthplace and home of Aboriginal watercolour artist, Albert Namatjira.
Hermannsburg, established in 1877 on the banks of the Finke River at the base of Mt Hermannsburg was previously known as the Finke River Mission.
In 1988, the german style whitewashed buildings were restored to their original 19th century condition. A museum, tearooms and an art gallery featuring some of Namatjira’s original works are found within the historic precinct.
