ALICE SPRINGS CULTURAL PRECINCT

Alice Springs Cultural Precinct encompasses the art, culture and heritage of Central Australia in one location. The site includes Araluen Arts Centre, Museum of Central Australia, Strehlow Research Centre, Central Australian Aviation Museum, Central Craft, and Memorial Cemetery.

A self-guided walking tour around the site provides a fascinating glimpse into the art, culture and heritage of Central Australia, and into some of the local identities that helped develop the region. The site is culturally significant to the Aboriginal people of the area. There are seven registered sacred sites and trees of significance at Araluen.

Araluen Arts Centre is the focal point of Alice Springs’ performing and visual arts scene, incorporating galleries and a theatre.

The galleries feature a program of exhibitions with a focus on Aboriginal art from Central Australia, and contemporary art by local and Australian artists. The Albert Namatjira Gallery displays a rotating selection of paintings by this famous Aboriginal artist, his descendants and contemporaries. The gallery also features early works from Papunya and the “Hermannsburg School”.

The Museum of Central Australia follows the evolution of Central Australia from the big bang to ancient rocks containing the earliest traces of life and evidence of a great inland sea. Follow the development of the landscape and local mega-fauna to the more familiar mammals, reptiles and insects found today. The Museum features a replica of a local paleontological dig, an ancient waterhole with some surprising mega-fauna including a giant freshwater crocodile and the largest bird that ever lived, Dromornis stirtoni, dated at eight million years.
