BUSHFIRES NT
The Bushfires Council NT is a statutory body established by the Bushfires Act. The role of the Bushfires Council is to advise the Minister on measures to be taken to prevent and control bushfires in the Northern Territory.
When Travelling:
- Use fire places provided or ensure there is a 4 metre break cleared of all vegetation.
- Completley extinguish all camp and cooking fires before leaving.
- Do not light fires on extremley windy days
- Do not camp or park in thick grass as hot exhausts can start bushfires.
When Road is Obscured by Smoke:
- Turn on headlights, drive slowly and avoid stopping on the road
- If you cannot see clearly, pull over to side of road, leave head lights and hazard lights on and wait until smoke clears.
If threatened by wildfire in grassland:
- Stay in your vehicle
- Park vehicle in a clear area as far away as possible from trees, grass and bushes.
- Close doors, windows and air vents to protect from radiant heat and hot embers
- Lie on the floor and cover body with blanket or clothing.
- Wait until fire front has passed then check for any fires on or near vehicle.
